So why do some electric bikes have fat tires? It's a great question. There are tons of different electric bikes out there. The fat tire provides different things for different people. Typically, the fat tires are more built for off-roading. Trails, things of that nature. Also, the fat tires are great for sand. So the benefit or why companies are adding them, is the benefit is you can really have it as a dual sort of pavement, trail, sand bike. So you don't have to worry about, oh, I have two thin tires. With the fat tires, you can really just go anywhere you want. And if you're using the pedal assist, you won't feel the drag as much by having the fat tires.
If you have the fat tires on a standard bike if you're not riding that on trails, I don't recommend it, only because you're going to feel the drag of those tires. It's going to make peddling harder. The bike's going to go slower. There's just more rubber, more friction on the road. With an e-bike, the benefit is you've got the pedal assist and you've got the full-throttle, on our fat tires as an example. So really, it just gives you the ability to go where you want. You can go off-road, you can go on a trail, you can go on the pavement. Now the fat tires will drain the battery faster than the thin tires. Again, same thing. It's just more drag on the battery, on the motor, things like that.
Now you may not notice it. If you're going to go super long distances, I wouldn't recommend a fat tire bike. I mean, super long distances on pavement, because a thinner tire is going to definitely get you there faster, and also the battery will last longer with a thinner tire. Now, with that said, the other reason the fat tires are on bikes is they do provide a more cushy ride.
If you're going to be going over curbs a lot or up and down, the fat tires are really going to absorb a lot of the shock and make the ride smoother for you. Now, again, with a fatter tire, it's going to be a slower ride. More constraint, harder to pedal, but it's going to be softer on your body. And so some people prefer that. Really the tires are going to act as shock absorption. So it depends on what you're looking for. If you like that if you don't like that. Are you looking to ride long distances?
If you're looking for shorter distances around town, and let's say you're not going to go more than 10 miles at a time, and you really want maximum comfort, the fat tire is probably something to consider because it's going to be like riding on a pillow. You just think about it. When you have a really thin tire, it's very hard. You're going to feel every bump. When you go over a curb, it's going to be stiff. With the fat tire, it's very soft, easy. The tire really absorbs the bumps into it, and it feels nice. So that's why electric bikes or why some electric bikes have fat tires, really for the cushion of it, for the comfort of it, and also for the off-road and on-road capability.
So it's really up to you to think about what's best for you and how are you going to use your electric bike, and whether or not a fat tire choice is good for you.
