Charleston, South Carolina is a dreamy city for pedal pushers. In fact, the League of American Bicyclists deemed this historic town a Bike Friendly Community, and the city continues to improve conditions for cyclists. Whether you’re seeking guided Charleston bike tours, or something more off of the beaten path, we’ve wrangled up the best biking in Charleston, SC for you. Read on to find out more about the best five bike tours Charleston, SC has to offer.

  1. South of Broad Street

The region of Charleston that is south of Broad Street is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the entire United States. Check out regal 18th century architecture and historic mansions, all while being shaded by crisp Crape Myrtles and stunning Live Oak trees.

  1. Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge

This ride, just under three miles, offers breathtaking views of the water and city as you glide over it. This path across the Cooper River just opened in 2005, and offers both biking and pedestrian lanes. Enjoy the ride, but be sure to keep an eye out for both runners and walkers!

  1. Hampton Park

This local gem is never crowded with tourists as it’s far enough away from the bustling main historic district of downtown Charleston. This quiet ride means you don’t have to put up with a lot of vehicular or pedestrian traffic. Cruising around this section of the city gives you a glimpse of the lovely 19th and 20th century homes dedicated to the working class – single row, shotgun styled houses that used to house the city’s labor force. Hampton Park adds a touch of greenery to the space with its pleasant ponds, Spanish moss, Live Oaks, manicured gardens, and magnolias.

  1. Ansonborough

The city is divided up into four different boroughs, with Ansonborough

being the furthest east on the peninsula. The neighborhood is named after George Anson, a notorious pirate hunter who patrolled the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia and won the acreage with a lucky hand of cards in the 1720’s. Port Charleston is right down the street, making this neighborhood heavy in federal styled architecture. Cruising around this neighborhood will have you feeling just like you’re on the set of the movie Treasure Island.

  1. Francis Marion National Forest

To get off the beaten trail, swing by this nearly 260,000-acre coastal forest that is north of the city. There is a great seven-mile trail through the woods that passes over boardwalks and provides a great view of the salt creeks that flow beneath.
