San Francisco can be one of the most enjoyable places for a beginning bike rider to explore. That is, unless you find yourself in route to somewhere amazing with one of those legendary San Francisco hills in front of you. Don’t end up stuck with a monster incline or 2-mile detour as your only options. Carefully plan out the best beginning bike ride in San Francisco and you’ll be able to fully enjoy a trek in this beautiful city.
Here are some of the top San Francisco bike trails for novices:
- Presidio National Bike Path and Golden Gate Bridge
This might be one of the most thrilling bike rides in the world. The scenery is outstanding and the journey will be easy. Start at any spot in the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Bike along San Francisco's iconic waterfront bike path as slowly as you like, taking in the ocean breeze and all of the sights. The path is separated from cars so it’s ideal for beginners. As you leave Fisherman’s Wharf riding toward Fort Mason, you’ll get your first clear view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Continue on the path through the Marina and past multi-million dollar mansions. Stop for a snack in Crissy Field and grab a coffee from the Warming Hut to fuel you up for your trek across the Golden Gate Bridge. Once you’ve crossed the bridge, you have a carefree descent ahead of you into the seaside town of Sausalito. Enjoy lunch and some shopping, and then take the ferry back to San Francisco.
- Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is a 1,000-acre lush urban oasis that draws thousands of San Francisco residents and visitors each year. This bike rider’s playground is larger than New York City’s Central Park and it’s filled with dozens of paths and trails, making it one of the best places to ride your bike in San Francisco away from cars and amidst sheer beauty. On Sundays, John F. Kennedy Drive is closed to vehicle traffic so the park is even safer to ride in. For a break in your ride, visit the Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum or Conservancy of Flowers. Some of the bike paths in Golden Gate Park will take you all the way to the sea.
- The Embarcadero
The Embarcadero is the only area in San Francisco where you can legally ride your bike on the sidewalk. It’s a long stretch of waterfront that offers spectacular scenery including views of the bay, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, AT&T Park and San Francisco's historic Ferry Building. The San Francisco Bike Coalition recently blazed a path for bikers on the Embarcadero by leading a charge for re-striping of the green bike lanes. This is just part of the great biking infrastructure that you’ll find in San Francisco. If you want to ride the Embarcadero, we suggest you start at Pier 41. Head toward Pier 39 along the waterfront toward the home of the Giants. You might be able to catch a home run ball as you glide by.
