If you’re an urban dweller or live near where you work, biking to work can seem like the ideal solution to avoid rush-hour traffic and cut down on the costs of car maintenance. But, before you turn your gas-guzzler in for a commuter bike, there are a few things you should know about how to ride to work. Luckily, we’ve compiled this handy-dandy beginner’s guide to riding to work on a commuter bicycle.
- Practice Safe Riding
If you’re new to the cycling world, or live in a city congested with tons of traffic, you should practice getting comfortable with your cruiser before you attempt to commute to work. Practice in your driveway, a quiet park, or a car-free side street. Also, practice the range of motions that you’ll do on your bicycle, including stopping suddenly, shoulder checking, and riding with a single hand.
- Check Your Cruiser
It’s important that your bike is ready to hit the road as much as you are. This means giving it a once-over every time you ride it. Make sure that your tires are inflated properly, check the chain, and ensure the brakes work properly. If you’re uncomfortable with basic bike mechanics, take your ride over to a local bike shop for a quick inspection before your next ride.
- Find a Riding Pal
Selecting a more experienced riding buddy to cruise with helps to beat those first ride nerves. Ask a friend, family member, or even a coworker who cycles daily and join them for a trip around your area.
- Plan Ahead
Before you leave the house, plan a route to work that doesn’t have a lot of vehicular traffic. Many cities in America have commuting routes dedicated to cycling infrastructure, while many others have cycling paths that will cover at least half of your commute.
- Be Wary of Space
Be cognizant of other riders, walkers, and cars that may be around you. Yield to pedestrians at cross-walks and always check over your shoulder before turning to make sure there aren’t any cars rushing by. Keep in mind that parked cars are a danger too as many people will open a door without checking to see if a rider is whizzing by.
- Road Rules
Always obey traffic laws. Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic signs and lights.
- Use Hand Signals
If you use hand signals in a practical manner, other folks can better plan their next moves around you. Use hand signals when you’re stopping or turning to avoid unnecessary confusion.
- Be Visible
Always wear brightly colored clothing and ensure that all of your lights and reflectors are working properly. This is especially important at night or during a rainy or overcast day.
