The correct sizing of a mountain bike is important for your safety and comfort. But many women mountain bikers who are women riding men mountain bikes find that adjusting their bike to fit their unique size and shape can be difficult, if not impossible altogether. Thankfully, we’re here to help! Here are three easy adjustments you can make on your mountain bike to get the ideal fit:
One of the easiest adjustments that you can make is that of your seat. When your foot is on the bike pedal, there should be a slight bend in your knee. If you’re too hunched over or if you are unable to touch the ground while you’re still in the saddle, your seat may be too high or too low.
Adjust your seat either up or down depending upon the information given above. Using an Allen wrench, loosen the bolt located on your seat post clamp. When you are finished moving the seat, tighten the bolt until it no longer turns.
Another tip is to get a women-specific saddle seat. These seats are wider in the back than a man’s saddle seat since a woman’s sit bones are farther apart. A lot of saddle seats for women also have a cut-way in the middle that cater to your anatomy.
Women typically have narrower shoulders than men. You want wide bars for technicality, safety, and comfort, but it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. To tell if your bars are the right size for you, put your hands on the bars in a comfy position for braking and shifting. Your hand’s inside edge (by your pointer finger and thumb) should align with the outer edge of the crease of your armpit. Ask a gal pal to help with this, or use a mirror to get the correct positioning.
Ensure that your front shock is correctly catering to your weight. You can go to your local cycling store or bike shop for help or use a pressure gauge or suspension pump and do it yourself in the comfort of your own home.
