10 Bike Legends Every Cyclist Should Know

Need a little inspiration to get back on the road? Sometimes we could all use a reason to push past a plateau in our cycling routine. Well, look no further. If you ever feel like giving up your training for the next triathlon (or even your casual Sunday rides), a look at these top riders will renew your motivation. Here are 10 of the best cyclists of all time that you should know about:

  1. Jacque Anquetil

The first man to reach five GC victories at the Tour de France, Anquetil was also known for his confidence. He predicted he would lead the 1961 Tour de France from start to finish and then he followed through.

  1. Eddy Merckx

Elvis sideburns aside, Eddy Merckx was also known for his strength. Some would say no one pounded the pedals harder than him. He was also known to shout at other cyclists during breakaways.

  1. Peter Sagan

Just 28 years old as of 2018, Sagan is one the current and most exciting cyclists of our time. The Slovakian is an expert climber and known for his cornering.

  1. Fabiana Luperini

This Italian dynamo has won the Giro d'Italia Femminile a record five times, including four times in a row in the mid to late 1990s. She is also a champion of the Grande Boucle Féminine.

  1. Jens Voigt

Voigt often appears on lists of famous cyclists, and why wouldn’t he? What he lacked in impressive wins the recently retired cyclists more than made up for in grit and personality. His motto was “Shut up, legs.”

  1. Joane Somarriba

Somarriba hails from Spain and won her first La Grande Boucle Féminine in 2000. She didn’t stop there. The cyclist medaled three more times before her retirement in 2005.

  1. Megan Guarnier

In 2017, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) ranked Guarnier as the top cyclists in the whole world. If that wasn’t reason enough to keep up with her, she was also a part of Team USA during the Rio Olympics.

  1. Sean Kelly

Kelly has been called the greatest all-around cyclist of all time, and his 10 Classics victories explain why. He may never have won a Tour de France, but he topped the Paris-Nice Classic seven times.

  1. Chloe Hosking

Hosking had five major wins in 2016, including at the La Route de France and Giro Rosa. She is pulling back on the number of competitions she competes in, but her record is already leaving a legacy.

  1. Tom Boonen

He just might be the best cyclists to compete on cobbled streets. Boonen could control his bike over any terrain, which should give you more inspiration to tackle the potholes up the street.
